n the dynamic and competitive world of business, companies need to explore every avenue available to gain a competitive edge. One powerful strategy that often goes underutilized is joining a trade association and actively participating in industry conventions. These platforms offer a plethora of benefits that can significantly impact a company’s growth and success.

While paying industry association membership dues is a necessary financial commitment, it should not be seen as the sole requirement to reap the full benefits of association membership. Active engagement with industry associations is crucial for businesses to unlock the true value they offer.

Performance plastics companies should not only join to retain membership in IAPD, but engage in the association. At a bare minimum, attend the conventions and leverage the opportunities they offer.

2023 IAPD Annual Convention & connecX

IAPD’s 2023 Annual Convention & connecX will be held on October 23-26, 2023, in San Diego, CA, USA. The schedule will look differently this year. The general session and keynotes will be split into two days and the connecX tradeshow will be held in the middle of the week. Private supplier meetings will be dispersed throughout the week’s schedule. The IAPD Environmental and Women in Plastics Committees will team up for a volunteer project in the first part of the week — a beach cleanup at Harbor Island Beach.

Networking and industry connections
Trade associations and conventions provide unparalleled networking opportunities, connecting businesses with like-minded professionals, industry leaders and existing and/or potential customers. By participating in these events, companies can forge valuable relationships and expand their professional networks, which can lead to new partnerships, collaborations and business opportunities. Engaging with industry peers allows companies to exchange knowledge, gain insights and stay updated on the latest trends and developments within their sector. These connections can also offer support and mentorship, helping businesses navigate challenges and seize growth opportunities.

Access to industry expertise
Trade associations are hubs of industry expertise. By joining, companies gain access to a wealth of knowledge and resources that can be transformative for their operations. Associations often provide educational programs, seminars and workshops led by industry experts, empowering businesses to stay at the forefront of advancements in their field.

Access to industry influencers
Industry communities often attract renowned experts, thought leaders and influencers who actively participate and share their knowledge. Engaging in the community gives you the opportunity to interact directly with these influential figures, enabling you to learn from their experi-ences, gain insights into industry trends and seek guidance. Such interactions can open doors to mentorship opportunities, exposure to new ideas and the potential for recognition within your field.

Market visibility and branding
Participating in industry conventions offers excellent opportunities for companies to enhance their market visibility and brand recognition. Trade shows and exhibitions allow businesses to showcase their products, services and innovations to a targeted audience. By hosting booths or private meetings, and sponsoring and attending conventions, companies can attract potential customers, partners and suppliers. The heightened visibility gained through these events can lead to increased brand awareness, customer trust and ultimately, business growth.

“Active engagement with industry associations is crucial for businesses to unlock the true value they offer.”
Your presence and engagement matters
Your customers, suppliers and peers notice when you don’t show up. Additionally, it leaves the heavy lifting of advancing and improving the industry to a few companies that are willing to put forward their expertise and talent on industry/association initiatives. As an industry partner, showing up and engaging is a large part of growing the association and your own business.

Legislative and regulatory advocacy

Trade associations play a pivotal role in advocating for the interests of their members and the industry as a whole. They monitor legislative and regulatory developments, ensuring that the voices of member companies are heard and considered in policy-making decisions. By joining and engaging in a trade association, companies gain a stronger collective voice, enabling them to influence policies and regulations that impact their operations. This advocacy role helps shape a favorable business environment and safeguards the interests of the industry.

IAPD hires new government relations firm – Ogilvy Government Relations
IAPD has a robust government relations and advocacy program. We have engaged in strong efforts to educate lawmakers and regulators about performance plastics, their vital applications and role in building a modern and sustainable society. We also work to stave off the many attacks on performance plastics that could lead to bans on products, chemicals, facility expansions and exclusion in government funded projects.

There is still so much to do.

On May 1, 2023, IAPD contracted with a new government relations advocacy firm, Ogilvy Government Relations. Ogilvy has vast experience in working on related issues, such as advanced recycling, plastic/chemical bans, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and other regulations. They will level up our advocacy efforts and further our cause and message in Washington, D.C., USA.

Ogilvy representatives recently attended IAPD’s Leadership Development Conference and will be present at our convention in San Diego, CA, USA. Please join us at the convention and get to know your new representatives and advocates.

Joining a trade association and actively participating in industry conventions is a strategic move that can yield significant benefits for companies. From networking and access to industry expertise, to advocacy and market visibility, these platforms offer a wealth of advantages that can propel business success. By becoming part of a community of like-minded professionals, companies can tap into a vast pool of resources, knowledge and connections. The collective voice of trade associations empowers businesses to shape policies and regulations, while conventions provide unparalleled opportunities to showcase products, attract customers and gain market exposure. Embracing these powerful tools will position companies at the forefront of their industry, driving growth and achieving long-term success.
