Antimicrobial plastics market forecast to 2025
Antimicrobial Plastics Market by Type, Application, Region — Global Forecast to 2025, a report from Research and Markets, predicts that the antimicrobial plastics market size will grow from US$26.9 billion in 2020 to US$59.8 billion by 2025 at a CAGR of 10.1 percent. Consumer awareness about health-related issues is growing due to the increasing number of cases of nosocomial infections and epidemic outbreaks of life-threatening diseases such as H5N1 Avian influenza, H1N1 Swine flu and COVID-19. This has resulted in increasing demand from various sectors such as healthcare and medical for antimicrobial plastics due to their high antimicrobial activity, hardness, durability and transparency. They are also used in non-toxic plastic equipment. The growing demand for medical devices is likely to augment the market of antimicrobial plastics in the healthcare sector. However, volatile prices of raw materials and government regulations on the usage of plastics in certain applications are hindering the growth of the market.

February monthly leasing and finance index new business volume up
The Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s (ELFA) Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25), which reports economic activity from 25 companies representing a cross section of the US$900 billion equipment finance sector, showed their overall new business volume for February was US$7.4 billion, up 9 percent year-over-year from new business volume in February 2020. Volume was down 9 percent month-to-month from US$8.1 billion in January. Year-to-date, cumulative new business volume was down almost 4 percent compared to 2020. Separately, the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation’s Monthly Confidence Index (MCI-EFI) in March is 67.7, an increase from the February index of 64.4, and the highest level since April 2018.

ELFA President and CEO Ralph Petta said, “February metrics show healthy new business growth compared to the same period pre-pandemic last year. As vaccine distribution picks up across the country, labor markets improve and interest rates remain low, the U.S. economy will only improve as we move into Q2. Business confidence is at an historic high as measured by our Foundation’s Monthly Confidence Index (MCI). All this bodes well for business growth and expansion and the accompanying accelerating demand for productive equipment.” www.elfaonline.org/data/mlfi.

China remains largest global market for polyethylene pipe
According to the study Global Polyethylene Pipe from The Freedonia Group, demand for polyethylene (PE) pipe in China totaled 4.2 million metric tons in 2019, making it by far the world’s largest market with 33 percent of global demand and 59 percent of regional sales. The study found that:

  • China possesses massive agriculture, construction, manufacturing, oil and gas and utility sectors, all of which support plastic pipe demand.
  • China’s diverse process manufacturing industry – including chemicals, food processing, primary metals, pulp and paper and textiles – further supports sales.

China’s construction sector is nearly four times the size of that of the United States, the next largest national market, with its sales of polyethylene pipe around three times larger within that market. China’s infrastructure investment continues to make great strides, with product sales relative to population nearly double the global average. Nevertheless, the United States remains a more intensive user of plastic pipe on a per capita basis across many applications.

Globally, demand for polyethylene pipe is projected to grow 3.7 percent per year to 15.3 million metric tons in 2024, driven by increasing use of PE pipe across all markets. High density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe demand will record healthy growth on average through 2024 as pipe made from this resin is favored over other materials in water and sewer applications.

Global Polyethylene Pipe analyzes the world polyethylene pipe industry by country, resin and market. Historical data for 2009, 2014 and 2019 and forecasts for the years 2024 and 2029 are provided. Data for polyethylene pipe are presented in metric tons (weight of the entire pipe) and dollars. Demand is segmented by resin type: high density polyethylene (HDPE), cross-linked polyethylene (PEX), polyethylene of raised temperature (PE-RT), low density polyethylene (LDPE) and medium density polyethylene (MDPE). Market segments include: construction (potable water transmission and distribution; conduit; drain, waste, and vent; storm and sanitary sewer/drainage pipe), energy (oil and gas drilling, oil and gas transmission, natural gas distribution), agriculture (irrigation pipe) and industrial/structural/mechanical.
