The Value of IAPD in a Changing Industry Landscape

by Peter DelGado, Curbell Plastics, Inc.

alk into any IAPD meeting and you’ll see it right away: our industry is made up of a fascinating mix of companies, from family-owned distributors of different sizes, many that have been around for generations, to publicly traded companies and, more currently, firms backed by private equity. Each of these ownership models bring its own personality, priorities and pressures. Together, they’re shaping where the performance plastics industry is headed, and nowhere is that more evident than in the wave of consolidation we’ve seen in recent years.

So, how do these ownership styles fit together? And what does it mean for the future of plastics distribution and manufacturing? Let’s take a closer look.

Sustainability Comes to the Source Guide

Because the Real Story Isn’t What We Make — It’s What We Make Possible
by Susan Avery, CAE
IAPD CEO
Leading with Sustainability
Sustainability is one of the defining issues of our time. It affects our companies, our customers and our communities. Across every industry, conversations about environmental impact, responsible sourcing and circular economies are shaping decisions about the materials and products that power our world. For the performance plastics industry, this is more than an environmental imperative. It is a chance to lead.

At IAPD, we have long understood that sustainability is not a trend or a marketing line. It is an evolution that connects innovation, responsibility and performance. Over the years, our members have built a reputation for engineering excellence, technical expertise and material performance. Now, we are building on that foundation to show how performance plastics contribute to a more sustainable world.

PLASKOLITE’s POLYGAL® Multiwall Creates a Light-Filled, Roof at Samuel Adams Pavilion
At the Samuel Adams Pavilion at Tuscan Village in Salem, New Hampshire, designers sought a transparent roofing solution that would provide natural light while maintaining a comfortable environment for guests. The pavilion serves as a popular outdoor dining and events space, making material choice critical to balance aesthetics, weight, heat resistance and cost.

POLYGAL® Multiwall polycarbonate sheet from PLASKOLITE was selected as an alternative to glass, meeting the project’s structural and environmental requirements while enabling on-time and under-budget completion. The material offered several advantages for the pavilion roof:

Mitsubishi Chemical Launches NU-Range PMUC-Qualified Nuclear Polymers
Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials (MCAM) has introduced its NU-range, a standardized product designation for PMUC-qualified polymers intended for nuclear power applications. The new line aims to provide clearer traceability and simplified integration with utility systems.

“NU” indicates materials fully compliant with PMUC (Produits et Matériaux Utilisables en Centrale Nucléaire) standards, criteria set by EDF (Électricité de France) for polymers used in safety-sensitive nuclear plant environments.

Key features of the NU-range include:

  • Unambiguous product designation to distinguish nuclear-rated grades
  • Enhanced traceability and documentation across the supply chain

Utah State Study Highlights PVC Performance in Water Main Infrastructure
I

n a recent report, the Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association shared findings from a Utah State University (USU) study that benchmarks water main break rates and explores the long-term performance of various pipe materials.

Shutterstock

The study analyzed more than 800 utilities and nearly 400,000 miles of pipe data—representing about 17% of water mains across the United States and Canada. It found that the U.S. and Canada experience about 260,000 water main breaks annually, resulting in repair costs around US$2.6 billion.

On average, water mains in operation are roughly 53 years old, with 33% exceeding 50 years in age.

Some 20% (about 452,000 miles) of existing water mains have passed their useful life and require replacement — yet many remain in service due to funding shortfalls.

Building Relationships, Shaping Policy: IAPD Members Open their doors to congressional offices

I

APD members are playing a growing role in shaping the national policy landscape by hosting congressional staff and legislators at their facilities. These site visits, paired with strategic engagement through Washington, D.C. meetings and annual IAPD Performance Plastics Congressional Fly-Ins, are amplifying the collective voice of the performance plastics industry at a critical time.

Site Visits Strengthen Local and Federal Connections

In 2025, several IAPD member companies opened their doors to congressional offices, giving staff firsthand insight into how performance plastics are manufactured and used in essential industries. These visits included:

  • Polymershapes – Advance staff visit in April and site visit with Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne (R-TX-24) in May.
  • Konrady Plastics – Congressman Frank Mrvan (D-IN-1) in July
